What is Intellectual Property?

There are several types of intellectual property, including: Patents, Trademarks Copyrights, Trade Secrets, Industrial Designs

Programme Objectives:

At the end of this Programme, participants should be able to know that:

  • Intellectual property is the main means for innovators to secure their business plans [a defensive IP portfolio] and to focus their business development towards relevant strategic partners [an offensive IP portfolio] 
  • The pathway to Technology commercialization will be elaborated: the role of Team, IP, Technology, and Market will be discussed.
  • Useful and powerful monopoly techniques, both IP- focused, and out of the IP region. 
  • Branding and co-branding of products are critical technological and marketing issues to be studied and implemented from day one. The role of trademarks, use/manufacture licenses, and branding tactics and strategies will be presented.
  • The general structure, Team, Technology, and IP Market strategies and competitive analysis.

Ziv Shomroni Entrepreneur and professional manager of the course: Business Development Strategies for Inventions and Intellectual Property in collaboration with the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. 

Ziv Shomroni is an experienced business executive with over 15 years of entrepreneurship and managerial experience. Ziv served in top-level roles in general management (CEO), business development, marketing, and operations. Extensive experience in management and project development from inception to actualization in diverse areas of technologies ranging from hybrid seed breeding, BioControl Technologies, and water treatment to computerized and telecommunication-based systems. Ziv served in top management positions in several high-tech companies and as VP and Head of Business Development at Yissum, the technology transfer company of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. Ziv holds a B.Sc. in Information System Management from the University of Maryland and additional postgraduate diplomas in Business Administration and Marketing. Ziv holds a diploma for Directors and Other Senior Corporate Officeholders from the Leon Recanati School of Business Administration of Tel-Aviv University.

Dr. Eyal Bressler is an Asst. Prof. (IP Law) and a well-known Patent Attorney, Attorney at Law, and Expert in IP arbitration. Dr. Bressler serves as AIPPI IL (Treasurer) and is the Chair of the standing committee on Development and IP at AIPPI. He is a very active INTA member (Branding Committee), LES (IP arbitration), IAPPI, and ECTA (Design Committee). Dr. Bressler & Co. IP law firm is very prominent in IP and innovation-rich mergers and acquisitions in Israel, acting in deals and transactions valued at $53B in recent years.

Dr. Keren Hagai heads the Life Science Dept. and has expertise in various IP aspects in Biotech and Agriculture. Dr. Hagai has particular experience in seed and plant technology, improved seed traits, classical breeding, plant genetics, new plant varieties, and molecular biology. She has vastly practiced patent searches and analysis, patent strategy, patent drafting, prosecution, and FTO and patentability opinions. Keren holds Ph.D. (Biochemistry), M.Sc. (Plant Sciences), and B.Sc. (Biology), all from Tel Aviv University.

Dr. Joe I Wyse is an IL Patent Attorney and head of the Patent and Analysis Dept. at the Bressler IP Group (Israel). He has a Ph.D. (Genetics) from the University of London and was a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the Science Research Council (Queen Mary), investigating cytoplasmic inheritance. He leads the core patent team, directing patent strategy, drafting, prosecution, valuation, and due diligence patent analysis support. Dr. Wyse directs high-value patent prosecution and strategy in Life sciences, Medical devices, Medical tech, Pharma, Genetics, Plant Breeder’s Rights, Precision Agriculture, Blockchain technology, AI, ML, Cybersecurity, Robotics, and Fintech. The clients Dr. Wyse and the patent team assisted range from international corporate to SMEs, tech incubators, universities, research hospitals, and start-ups in all fields.

Aviv-Nicolas Pollak, Adv. heads the Brand Protection & Enforcement Department and advises on trademarks and trademark-related aspects, general intellectual property rights protection, enforcement, computer and internet law, various agreements, and UDRP proceedings (domain names). Aviv holds an LL.B & LL.M (OAC / Columbia University in the City of New York).

Dr. Revital Duvdevani has over 20 years of experience researching and developing drug treatments and medical devices using various medical indications.

Revital holds a Ph.D. in Neurobiology from the Weizmann Institute, a post-doctorate from Rutgers University in the United States, and an MBA. Revital has significant experience managing R & D in start-up biotechnology companies, in addition to 12 years of academic activity as a lecturer in physiology and pharmacology in the Department of Biotechnology Engineering at Ben Gurion University. Revital has extensive scientific knowledge in various fields of science, as well as experience in science education and management of the Weizmann Institute’s Science Museum.
